The cost of a job – schmoozing

Hello, stranger! New here? How about subscribing to my RSS feed? Thanks for visiting!
Three years ago, I made an investment in my career. I bought myself a set of starter golf clubs for $400. To this day, I’ve used them 3 times. Today, I’ll have the opportunity to use my clubs for the 4th time as it’s the annual golf tournament at my company. Excellent. I’ll be able to average down to $100 per outing on these babies. But I forgot to mention the shoes and the clothes I bought to complete the “look”. And let’s not forget the lessons and range practice I took as well. My instructor told me I had great form, but for some reason, all my clubs go only 70 yards. I should have saved the money and bought one stick and stuffed the rest of the bag with styrofoam batons.
In any case, I figure this day will set me back another $100 for green fees, cart, dinner and drinks. Truth be told, I think each year, the company costs me $300 in non-deductible schmoozing but I sign up for these things anyway. I think retaining good work relationships is important but I’ve yet to master networking for free in a social atmosphere. So far me, these expenses are worth it; it is a small price to pay for my job. I’m just lucky I have no aspirations to climb the corporate ladder or this could get expensive.

In retrospect, you should have just rented the clubs when you need them.
Good luck in the tournament!

Hi FP,
I think this is one of those gym memberships that you buy in the hopes that you will go
It was a fun tournament but I have to admit if it weren’t for my group and best ball, I’d still be out there right now, continuously topping the ball to watch it dribble 25 yards at a time. I think eventually I’ll get my money’s worth from my bag but I’m just not ready for prime time golf course. Time to hit the range and practice for next year.
