Canadian and American Economic Calendar

Hello, stranger! New here? How about subscribing to my RSS feed? Thanks for visiting!

I don’t often pay attention to what goes on with the stock markets on a day-to-day basis but even I know that the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will meet this afternoon. It is widely expected that they will cut the fed fund rate by .25 to 5% in order to increase economic growth.

As a long-term investor, this has little bearing on me in the long run. However, I still want to be aware of high profile market events when I enter/exit a position in a stock. I can thus avoid external market conditions influencing the target stock price. Therefore, I’ve bookmarked the MarketWatch site as it provides an economic calendar of Canadian and American events. How you wish to play it is up to you ;)

I learned that lesson the hard way a few years ago. My investment club bought a US stock (Avon, I think). The business itself did well, but as the $C rose relative to the $US, our growth was pretty much wiped out.

Appropriate lesson when we are flirting with the loonie almost at par. :) I think I’m going to finally convert some CDN $ into US $ in order to pick up some US ETFs and clean up my porfolio of expensive MERs. The Canadian market just isn’t deep enough and I have time on my side for the States to correct itself. I had thought about using “Norbert’s Gambit” to reduce forex charges but I’m not going to bother now.
