Stock picks wiki
moneyrelations :: Nov.02.2007
Today, I’m going to review the progress of my stock picks wiki page of the Million Dollar Wiki. If readers will recall, this was my experimental buy-in at viral marketing. The concept is simple: investors buy a keyword to a page and have the right to populate the content. The idea is to leverage the collective information of the wiki pages to share traffic and buzz. This is much like the Wikipedia but only one author per page and you are allowed to monetize the page.
So, how am I doing with the stock picks page? Well, the good news is that I rank #1 on Yahoo for “stock picks wiki” and it also has a Google PageRank of 3. Oh yeah, and #2 on MSN as well. I’ve also earned a very modest $25 in three months by participating in the in-house forums creating buzz and traffic. I’m sure I’ll make back my $90 U.S. investment in the 15 year lifetime of the site.
Now I come to the bad news. With every success story, there are bound to be copycats – some with even better marketing strategies, price points and web development. That’s what happens when you don’t “widen your moat” as Warren Buffett would say – your competitive edge and brand deteriorates.
Also, something that I didn’t anticipate when I bought the page was that I would be in business with idiots. Other page owners are in essence my business partners. If they do something “illegal” in the eyes of Google, it torpedoes the whole site in terms of search engine rankings. This is what has happened to me. I used to also rank #1 for “stock picks wiki” in Google as well – now I’m around 80. And frankly, each page owner is well within their rights to do whatever they want with their page. I’m just not sure what business model can accommodate pages of differing content quality. Heck, someone might hate my stock picks page as well. And if the site is not favored by the Google gods, something needs to light the community on fire to harness its collective (and self-sustaining) traffic.
If all else fails, there’s still my search ranking position with the other search engines. I’ll just have to roll up my sleeve and figure what to do with that.

hmm… what to do with all that money you make from the sale..
…. iPod Touch…nah.. they still have an inferior screen to the iPhone. Wait till they fix the iPod touch and the 2nd generation with 32 gig and no software restrictions comes out. I know there are two people very interested in the sale. With a total of 8 pages between two it might be time to cash in also. -Paul
Heya Paul
What money?
I did it to prove a point to all those other pages to be realistic in what they were offering. No indexing (or indexed when the page was last updated which was forever ago), no PR, no SERPs. What are they thinking? At least mine is viable as a landing page. Maybe I should have put in a price, but I’ll be willing to let it go for $250. That can go into my iTouch fund
Good luck in your endeavors, Paul. You know I’m always curious
