Memories for money

Hello, stranger! New here? How about subscribing to my RSS feed? Thanks for visiting!

On February 3, the number of “weekend widows” will spike as husbands and boyfriends gather around plasma screens all over North America for the National Football League championship known as the Superbowl. For readers on the other side of the pond, it’s the kind of football where we play with our hands.

Football is a huge business in the United States with betting and commercials spots. However, I don’t really gamble and Canadians don’t get to watch those infamous Superbowl ads so I’m not really interested in that aspect. What is more interesting to me is how much those tickets costs! I’m all for “you only live once” moments but at an average price of $4300 for a scalped ticket, that’s pretty steep. And I even read that one dad spent $40k for 4 tickets on the 50 yard line for the whole Superbowl experience for him and his 3 boys.

That has got to be a thrill of a lifetime for male bonding but I have to ask, does money make the memories? Is a $40k experience forty thousand times better than watching it from home?

I guess the politically correct answer would be no. I have some wonderful childhood memories that didn’t cost a lot of money. But then again, the trip to Disneyland rocked too.

As always, these things require a balance between frugality and extravagance but any thoughts on your best family trip and whether or not it required money?

BTW, I hope the Giants win.  Golden boy Brady doesn’t need to get more press.

I’m not thrilled with either team. Brady gets all the chicks and fame or another Manning gets to the Superbowl for their family dynasty. Would have liked to have seen Farvre get one another shot at it.

    Girls like football too!

Oh, and I definitely hope the Giants win too. Since they beat the Cowboys I hope they at least go on to win it all and make the division look good. Plus I have to admit I’d be feindishly pleased to see the Patriots (and Brady) have some bad press for a change. Undefeated? Ugh. We’ll never hear the end of it.

And unless you’re a billionaire I think it’s stupid to spend $40K on Superbowl tickets. Even if you are a billionaire it’s stupid. The only reason tickets cost that much is because materialistic a-hole Americans will pay it. Imagine how much good could be done with that money…

OMG! $4K for 1 ticket… pfffff… I think I’ll stayed cuddled up with my girl on the couch watching from the best seat in the house… priceless… that’s if I was an A-hole American… ;-) for me though there are much more intellectually challenging and interesting things to do.

Agreed Meg. I’m a huge female football fan, but I don’t like the pros as much as college football. Even though I’m a huge football fan I couldn’t justify spending 10,000 dollars a ticket. I could think of hundreds of ways I’d rather spend my money.

If I had the money ie $10mill in the bank then yes, I would pay $40k to attend the superbowl with three other people – those tickets are hard to get!

I would also make an effort ($) to attend some Stanley Cup final games which are also hard tickets.

Aww, come on guys, you are no fun ;)

Okay, 40k for 4 tickets is a bit much but how much would you be willing to pay for a concert ticket, the Olympics, or as Mike mentioned Stanley Cup final tickets?

The dad who bought the tickets got them at the 50 yard line and included pre and post game parties and hotel accommodations. I’m not saying that’s right but just so you guys get the whole picture… and he is a mutual fund manager, lol. So that’s where our money goes :P

    @ Serge

I don’t know what it is about Brady… he just seems to be a bit too perfect. I always liked Peyton though. So if it’s not big bro, then let Eli be the Patriot slayer.

    @ Meg and Selene

Yes, girls can be football fans too :) For myself, I’m a very casual football fan. I am in the office pool every year and last year I won a couple of weeks. This year I came in middle of the pack. I know very, very little (only which team is considered a good). But when it’s against the spread, anybody can be competitive.

And I agree that better things can be spent with the money.

    @ Paul

Not even the Sydney Olympics, Paul? I admit I get teary eyed whenever I go to live games and they play the national anthem. It’s the burst of pride thing. I’d love to go to the Vancouver Olympics.

    @ Mike

    I did try to get Stanley Cup final tickets at $250 a piece… wasn’t able to… ;)

    That is all :)
